The Greek linothorax was a type of ancient body armor used by Greek warriors, particularly hoplites, from around the 7th to 4th centuries BCE. Unlike metal armor, the linothorax was made primarily of linen (linos)—hence its name.

Key Features:

  • Material: The linothorax was constructed by layering multiple sheets of linen on thick veg tanned leather (often glued or stitched together), sometimes up to 2-3 layers thick, to create a stiff, protective shell. In some versions, leather or thin bronze scales were added for extra protection.

Design:

  • It typically covered the torso and had shoulder flaps (epomides).
  • Pteruges, or skirt-like strips, hung from the waist to protect the hips and upper legs.
  • It was often laced or tied together at the sides or front.

Advantages:

  • Lightweight and flexible, compared to bronze cuirasses.
  • Easier to produce and likely cheaper than full bronze armor.
  • Provided a good balance of protection and mobility.
  • Use in Warfare: It became especially common during the Classical period of Greece, and Alexander the Great’s Macedonian soldiers likely used linothoraxes.
  • Artistic Evidence: Depictions of the linothorax appear frequently in ancient Greek pottery, sculptures, and mosaics. No physical examples have survived due to the organic materials used, but reconstructions based on art and texts show how effective and sophisticated this armor was.

The Greek Linothorax Cuirass was a widespread armored defense for warriors of the Greek world in the 7th and 4th centuries BC and it is commonly depicted in Greek art and noted in several written sources. Despite its apparent universality little is known of the exact composition and construction of the armor due to the inability of its components to withstand the degradation of time. What is known is the general appearance of the armor from visual sources and the fact that linen was probably used as at least one component, though to what degree and in what manner remains unverified beyond educated conjecture.
